Barbie Feelings: My First Day of Preschool
Published in Paperback by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (May, 1999)
Authors: Jean Bay and S I Artists
Average review score:

Good book for calming the fears of a new preschooler!
This is a good book for a 3-or 4-year old who is begining preschool. In this story, a little girl who will be starting preschool confronts her fears. She asks her stuffed animal, Rocky, what he thinks preschool will be like. These questions are the very questions that most young children worry about before their first day of school. Later in the book, her questions are answered as we follow her on her first day. The pictures are specific to the text, so the book is very easy for a young child to follow. My daughter is 3, and we have read this book many times together. I recommend it!

Bargain Hunting in the Bay Area
Published in Paperback by Wingbow Press (August, 1978)
Author: Sally Socolich
Average review score:

good resource
While I haven't used this book to shop until I drop, I have used it when I want to shop for something specific. It is organized by type of items sold but also has an index in the back that allows you to see what stores are in a certain location (by city). I like the latter because I found there was a store I used to go to elsewhere (out of my way) right around the corner from my office. I also use it to find other stores that are near a place I am already headed for.

Barnegat, NJ: Life By The Bay
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 November, 1997)
Author: Kevin Hughes
Average review score:

For anyone who appreciates the Jersey Shore
Once a summer fishing retreat for the Leni Lenape Indians and often mistaken for its more famous and similiarly-named neighbor on Long Beach Island (Barnegat Light- home of 'Old Barney'), this South Jersey town is paid tribute to in "Barnegat: Life by the Bay".

Composed mainly of black and white photographs from the early 20th century, it includes a brief introduction chronicling some of Barnegat's rich history, from its first charting by Henry Hudson to its early Quaker tradition and the still-familiar names of some of the first settlers - Birdsall, Cranmer, Ridgeway and Collins.

Its interesting to see certain landmarks, from early pictures of the Barnegat Dock, Clayton's Log Cabin from '36 (only recently burnt down), the old firehouse on East Bay Ave, and Barnegat High School (now Elizabeth V. Edwards Elementary School). Neighboring towns are also shown (Manahawkin, Waretown and LBI).

Highly recommended.

Battle on the Bay : The Civil War Struggle for Galveston

Battle On The Bay
I am a civil war re-enactor who lives in the Houston/Galvestion area. I have found Edward T. Gotham's book "Battle ON The Bay" a very thoughtfull read. He not only gave the history of the battle of Galveston, but throughly developed the main charactures in this battle which occured New Years day; 1863. I could not put this book down. every page held my attention, and i wondered what the next page contained. Not only did it inform me about the history of the area where i live, but i felt as if i were there living it. i am proud to have this book in my library.

Bay Area Thomas Bros Map
Published in Paperback by Thomas Brothers Map (October, 1998)
Average review score:

Still the best
Thomas Bros' map books are legendary. I've seen copy cat books, but none compare for accuracy, detail, and organization. The book format is both an asset and a hindrance. No more trying to look at a 2' square piece of paper while driving. On the other hand, you have to flip through pages, which loses some of the sense of continuity of a regular map. Anyways, I won't leave home without it.

The Bay of Pigs: The Leaders' Story of Brigade 2506
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (June, 1974)
Author: Haynes Johnson
Average review score:

History told by those involved
While I've never read any of his other works, Haynes Johnson did a wonderful job with this one. By writing this not too long after the Bay of Pigs invasion, he was able to talk to those involved while it was still reasonably fresh in their memories. The fact that it is told from their point of view makes this a powerful and moving account. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in either Cuban history or Cold War history. It may not be a very comprehensive view of the situation since its told mainly from one view point, but it's an interesting starting point.

Bay Tripper: Chesapeake Bay Travel Guide

Volume II (Western Shore)
This book (ISBN 0-9613008-2-5) is actually titled "Bay Tripper Chesapeake Bay Travel Guide Volume II Western Shore" and is not to be confused with the other edition "Volume I Eastern Shore".

This book is a handy guide to have with you as you explore the many small towns along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The book lists attractions, lodging, restaurants, and more for each town.

Birds of San Francisco and the Bay Area
Published in Paperback by Lone Pine Publishing (June, 2003)
Authors: Chris C. Fisher, Gary Ross, and Joseph Morlan
Average review score:

A Great Beginner's Guide
I have carted this book along on many outings since my relocation to California. This has come in very handy for quick identifications and a brief summary of the birds' typical habitats and even their mannerisms.

The main reason I enjoy this guide is that, if the species is included in the book, I can usually find it within thirty seconds. Often times the bird is still in sight and I can easily compare its markings to those found in the guide.

I highly recommend this book as a quick reference guide.

Chadwick the Crab

Fun Teaching Tool
You don't have to be from the Cheseapeake Bay area to appreciate Chadwick the Crab and his friends. They are delightful and your kids will never know these books are educational. Yet, they are. The story of Chadwick teaches us about creatures in and around the bay, what they eat, the dangers they face etc. Help bring up environmentally sensitive kids by reading about Chadwick, Toulouse, etc. Oh, and crabs CAN be cuddly!
